The painting Poplars near Nuenen by Vincent van Gogh was painted in 1885 and retouched two years later by the artist himself, "to give it brighter colors," as can be inferred from a letter to Theo, the artist's brother. The blue lines painted in the sky and the touches of brightness in the trees (poplars) are the changes that were added, scholars deduce, based on these colors being brighter than what Vincent usually painted in 1884. The way the ground is painted (with isolated brush strokes) also seems to reflect a later Impressionist influence. The painting is currently on display at the Boijmans Van Beuningen Museum in the Netherlands.
