Painting Louveciennes or, The Heights at Marly by Alfred Sisley in France, 1873.
Towards the end of the 1800s, the area of Paris known as Louveciennes became a major source of inspiration for many prominent painters of the time.
Alfred would sit for several days to paint next to the Louveciennes Pavilion (Château de Madame du Barry), on the downhill path. The houses depicted in his work are now historical monuments and were part of the impressive mechanism known as the Marly Machine. This construction, commissioned by Louis XIV, was intended to supply water to the majestic fountains of the Palace of Versailles.
