Sacred and Profane Love, Titian

A mythological-themed composition, it has been the subject of numerous, often contradictory interpretations.
It was commissioned in 1514 to the master painter Titian by Nicolò Aurelio (Great Chancellor of Venice, 1523–1524) on the occasion of his marriage to the young widow Laura Bagarotto from Padua.
The painting possibly portrays a bride, adorned with marital symbols and accompanied by Cupid and Venus, blending nuptial elements with allegories of the earthly and the divine, through perishable riches and the wondrous light of celestial eternity.
The symbolic elements included are: a fountain with bas-relief (in the center), 2 hares, Cupid (central child figure), fortified building (left), and a church (right).
