This mythological-themed painting was one of those originally commissioned by Duke Alfonso I d'Este to Raphael Sanzio, who died having barely started it.
The purpose of the work was to decorate a room in one of the Duke's residences, the Castello d'Este.
It describes a literary episode, where the god Bacchus (or Dionysus), steps down from his chariot to woo the beautiful daughter of kings, Ariadne.
Here Titian demonstrates his superlative skill as an anatomist, by drawing the most diverse human, semi-human, and animal creatures.
