This canvas belongs to the earliest artistic period of the painter, it was to decorate the Church and Hospital of Charity of Seville (see on Wikipedia), a hospice house created to welcome the most destitute. The father as a figure of God, receives the son who had been lost and now returns, the little dog signifies that the scene is intended to be entirely earthly and not mythological.
On many occasions this biblical passage has been painted, this is considered one of the best achievements of the entire period, as it exquisitely exposes the facial and bodily expressions of the characters. The composition in terms of coloration, lighting, and background recalls the works of Titian.
Another of the famous paintings on the same theme is this well-known version, made by Rembrandt, which features a marked Baroque style of the Flemish school.
