Painting titled Saudade, painted in 1899 by José Ferraz de Almeida Júnior, a Brazilian painter.
The composition is in a realistic style, the left side in the foreground, shows a rustic pillar of strong red and orange bricks, the same that form the partition under the window. Continues below...2
The work features a Caucasian woman with indigenous Amazonian features, dressed in black and looking at a photo through tears by the window.
The black attire of the woman emphasizes the feeling of longing and suggests that she is a widow. The dress absorbs and blocks the light coming in from the window, with the only exception being the character's hand, which is illuminated inviting the viewer to focus on it.
The title of the work is the same in Portuguese and Spanish, as the word "saudade", originally used in Brazil, is difficult to translate and has recently been incorporated into the Spanish language.
This painting is currently located at the Pinacoteca do Estado de São Paulo, Brazil.
